Biography
In the dynamic economic landscape of the Netherlands, family businesses are a pillar of stability and innovation, which contribute significantly to our prosperity. These companies embody the Dutch entrepreneurial spirit across generations. After Henk Kwakkel conducted earlier research in 2014, which resulted in the 'Handbook of family businesses and succession', which included the scientifically developed SAS model©, the time was ripe to investigate what changes had taken place within family businesses after 10 years. At the moment, Holtrop Ravesloot and EY are conducting research into succession and transfer under Henk's leadership. The SAS model© discusses four important themes around business transfer: corporate governance, family governance, internal interaction and external interaction. The research integrates all four pillars by analyzing the case studies. In a historical perspective, it was investigated how family businesses have organized their succession and/or transfer through the different stages of development, also called life phases. In the first half of 2024, 60 in-depth interviews were held with family entrepreneurs/managers of medium-sized and large family businesses, whereby the interviewed entrepreneurs indicated that they would like to contribute to the development of knowledge about family businesses in general and more specifically about the theme of business transfer. In the second half of 2024, Holtrop Ravesloot and EY will invest in publishing the results of this new research. The practical examples illustrate how family businesses manage today's complexity with regard to governance, family dynamics and the internal or external environment. And which choices underlie this. They serve as a practical demonstration and validation of the SAS model©.
